A Fort Lewis soldier was arrested Monday on suspicion of fatally shooting a buddy after a long day of drinking, Pierce County sheriff's officials said.

The soldier, 23, was booked into jail just after 3 p.m. on one count of first-degree manslaughter.

The victim, 31, who was also in the military, had spent Sunday at his Lakewood apartment, watching football and drinking before going over to his friend's place in the 11200 block of 18th Avenue South in Parkland, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The soldier told officers he woke up about 1:30 a.m. and found his buddy dead on the floor of the apartment, Troyer said. The suspect, described as "extremely intoxicated," called 911.

"Guns came out and a round was fired," Troyer said. "We believe he was responsible for the shot, though it may not have been on purpose."

Investigators were still putting together a timeline of events. "Handguns and alcohol don't mix," Troyer said.
