Preliminary results of an autopsy completed on a hunter who was found dead near Paterson show the Richland man apparently accidentally shot himself, Benton County Coroner Rick Corson said.
Daniel William Reberger, 56, was found Sunday night on Whitcomb Island.
Benton County sheriff's deputies found him after he was reported about four hours overdue from a solo hunting trip.
"There appears to be no foul play," Corson said, but added that he needs to wait for lab test results before making a final ruling.
The autopsy was completed Tuesday by Dr. Daniel Selove, an Everett forensic pathologist. Corson said Reberger died Sunday.
Sheriff's Lt. Brian White said it appears Reberger's gun was loaded and didn't have the safety on when he grabbed it by the barrel and it went off, striking him in the chest.
