Seattle police are still searching for a gunman who shot a man and a woman during an argument in Belltown Friday night.

The shooting happened near First Avenue and Bell Street just past 11:30 p.m., Seattle police reported.

According to police, the two men got into an argument in a parking lot as Halloween revelers roamed nearby from bar to bar. At some point, one of the men pulled a gun and witnesses told police they heard five to eight shots fired.

One man was shot in the upper right leg near the groin area. A woman who was nearby was shot in the face, although it appears she was shot accidentally.

"She was just an innocent bystander," police spokeswoman Renee Witt said.

Officers arrived and found one of the gunshot victims, a 23-year-old man. Two other men had taken the woman, also 23, to Swedish Hospital, Witt said.

Initially, officers believed that one of the men who took the woman to the hospital was the gunman. Officers took him to police headquarters for questioning, but released him soon after, Witt said.

She said it appears the person responsible for the shooting remains at large.

Police said the male gunshot victim was in serious condition and the woman was in critical condition with were described as life-threatening injuries. There was on information released on what prompted the argument that led to the shooting.
