SUNNYSIDE - Two Sunnyside teens were hospitalized Monday with multiple gunshot wounds they received apparently in retaliation for throwing rocks and bricks at another car.

An 18-year-old boy was in serious condition at a local hospital, said Sunnyside police spokeswoman Charlotte Hinderlider.

A 17-year-old boy also was hospitalized but reportedly was doing better than the older teen, she said.

Their exact conditions were not available Monday night because police did not release their names.

A written statement from Sunnyside Community Hospital said the emergency department was caring for two patients who were brought in by private vehicles. Both were stabilized, then transferred to another unnamed hospital.

The incident happened at 3:15 p.m. in the 400 block of South 13th Street, which is about a half-mile northwest of Sunnyside High School, 1801 E. Edison Ave.

Hinderlider said the teens who were shot reportedly were in the third car stopped at a stop sign at 13th and Edison when they climbed out of the car and threw rocks and bricks at the first car in line.

People in the first car shot at them, then left the scene.

Police say the people in the second car were not involved in the fight and were not injured.
